SEMINAR: BASIC PRINCIPLES OF SCIENTIFIC WORK

CONTENT OF THE SEMINAR

The seminar is held in blocks of three days and is intended to prepare students for independent, scientific work as part of their master's or doctoral thesis. The first block is dedicated to literature research. Search engines and their strengths and weaknesses are presented and tips for their use are shown. Correct and complete citation, including the use of citation programs, is illustrated. For this purpose, the concept of DOI, ISI indexing and the distinction between referenced and non-referenced articles will be discussed. In a second block, the scientific publication process is examined with parameters such as impact factor, h-index and their significance or limitations. The basic structure of a scientific article will be presented, as well as an editor's point of view on a manuscript, the peer review process and the processes after acceptance of the article. In the third block, presentation techniques will be discussed and practiced: Structure of a good presentation, design of slides, body language, etc. Extreme situations of public speaking, such as in expert interviews, are also discussed and practiced.
